- Please refer my home page. You can find link to English page and some of my papers.
- It is a really good idea to look through my research page to confirm whether your research interest fits mine. I often receive an e-mail from (foreign) students: "I'm interested in Toyota Production System" or something like that. It is apparently out of my research interests.
- You could search Japanese professors at,
- Research students(研究生).
- Unfortunately, Graduate school of Business and Commerce does not issue visa for "Research students(研究生)".
- It could be possible to attend my class unofficially, if you have a visa to stay in Japan. According to my knowledge, some of Language school in Japan support your visa".
- Here is some information for foreign students.
- Japanese Language
- For master students, courses at the Graduate school of business and commerce, Keio, except the Taxation program are taught in Japanese. Thus, you have to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test N1.
- I believe you can learn Japanese in your country. But some of my graduate students from China and Taiwan learned Japanese at the Keio language course (aka., Bekka). It provides a visa during your stay, allowing you to attend some classes at the faculty of business and commerce.
- If you seek grad courses in English at Keio, please refer to the following page.
- For Ph.D. students
- Our marketing department had some 15 Ph.D. students during the past 20 years. I guess 6-7 of them completed their Ph.D. thesis within 6 years (+2 years master course). Of course, the duration depends on your research topic, your research skill, and so on. But the completion ratio is lower than in US business schools. Additionally, you must ensure your financial back up during your stay in Japan.
- Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship for Research Students would be the best.
- For Master students
- Most students complete their thesis in two years. Of course, financial backup is important to keep your study and research at Keio.
- I will retire in March 2028; thus, I would like to devote the rest of my career to the education of Ph.D. students. If you are not going to Ph.D. course, please look for other professors.
- For PhD
- Summary of master thesis or equivalent paper and summary of it in English or Japanese is required for Ph.D. application. Here is a link to The application. Sorry, we have a Japanese page only because our course is in Japanese. For detail, please consult your Japanese teacher or returnee from Japan. The quality of your research paper is very, very, very important. So please take enough time to prepare.
- Research Plan
- You must submit your research plan at Keio. Typical research plan consist of (1) Research background, (2) Research purpose and Research Question(s), (3) Method. In (1), you should conduct literature survey. If you select Hamaoka as a mentor, your should refer Hamaoka's paper(s) or book(s) at this section. You are willing to come to Japan for research purpose, locating a good professor for your research should be a starting point of your visit in Japan.
- My preferred format of thesis is, (0)meaningful definition of research purpose, (1)review and critics of previous studies, (2) if possible, conduct a case study to find new hypotheses, (3) propose meaningful hypotheses, (4) test hypotheses with statistical techniques.
Your research style is not necessary follow my preference. But I do believe this is the most basic pattern for scientific research.
- Language
- In our graduate school, courses are taught in Japanese, except W Bank course. Of course, class discussion is in Japanese. However, you thesis could be in Japanese or English.
